Banana Applesauce Muffins: A Holiday Treat

One of the best parts of any holiday is the food. Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter - family traditions are all about the feast. Even "lesser" holidays are often about grill outs and barbecues. When it comes to the later season holidays, it's hard not to like all the choices that banana applesauce muffins have to offer.

One of the first things to understand is that not every recipe for banana applesauce muffins is the same. There are recipes focusing on the fact that you can make a delicious almost fat free version, there are sugar free versions (yeah to applesauce for its sweetness), and there are versions that focus just on an explosion of natural sweet and fruity flavors that are delicious either right out of the oven or even as a cold midnight snack.

Don't Ignore the Applesauce
There are many different types of applesauce that have different textures, consistencies, and flavors. What does this mean? You can go a long way towards altering the overall flavor based on which applesauce you choose. Natural chunky gives that fresh fruity flavor, while red applesauce adds a nice bit of dessert flavor and cinnamon infused sauce.

Which version do your taste buds prefer? You can add sprinkled walnuts, add in extra cinnamon, or add your own little touches to make the ideal batch of banana applesauce muffins. Some cooks even believe that the type of flour used makes a difference. If you like natural flavors, why not go with whole wheat flour as opposed to the plain white stuff?

So Is There a Good Base Recipe?
While recipes can vary quite a bit, a common recipe for banana applesauce muffins might call for a basic ingredient list like:

Ripe bananas
Sugar or natural sweetener
Applesauce
Flour
Baking powder
Baking soda
Salt
Vanilla extract
Eggs

This is a list that can be altered depending on taste. When you get the balance of applesauce versus flour right, take a look at brown sugar or honey over sugar, changing up or mixing types of applesauce, or adding little extras on top like chopped walnuts and powdered sugar.

There are multiple recipes for vegans, as well as dieters looking to go low sugar or low fat. Add in some canola oil or milk or if you can never get enough chocolate, adding in a little bit of dark chocolate can help fix that.

If you don't like the first recipe you try, experiment around until you get that perfect taste.
